Knowledge Communities are groups of Mavens who share a common bond. This might be an employer (or former employer), university alumni association, industry association to which they belong, or even a media outlet to which they subscribe. However, unlike other online "groups," Knowledge Communities are designed to allow participants to help each other by sharing their knowledge and expertise in meaningful ways - and to be rewarded for doing so!

For example, companies use Maven to discover and unlock the undiscovered (and underutilized) expertise of their employees and to reward those employees for help each other. Likewise, a university might create a Knowledge Community to help its alumni network with one another while generating Referral Commissions that help support the school's fundraising efforts.
